What is a dream?

Dreams have long been a source of intrigue for me as they seem to hold many clues to who I am and solve many issues I have dealt with over the years. When I was a child, I was a very vivid dreamer but as I got older and more jaded by life, I began to shut down my dreams just as I was shutting down from life. I did this to the point where I no longer remembered my dreams and that mysterious world disappeared for a time. Thankfully when I began working with myself 15 years ago, I also allowed for my dreams to resume…in more ways than one!

I have met many people who say they do not dream and I was one of them but that is untrue. We all dream, whether we believe or remember them or not. There has been much research done around dreaming and it shows that dreaming is not just a by-product of sleep but serves its own important functions in our health and well-being.

While many of us may feel that our dreams have special meaning or a useful purpose, science has been more skeptical of that claim. Instead of our dreams communicating to us ideas of creativity or some kind of message from our unconscious, some scientists have considered dreaming to be an unintended consequence of sleep—a by-product of evolution without benefit. I disagree.

We often hear stories of people who’ve learned from their dreams or been inspired by them. Think of Paul McCartney’s story of how his hit song “Yesterday” came to him in a dream. My own Father invented a tool for the oilfield when I was young that came to him in a dream and at the time, revolutionized the oil industry. I too have been inspired by my dreams many times and I find them to be absolutely invaluable!
